The ‘Four Resource Model’ (Freebody & Luke, 1990; Freebody & Luke, 1999) has been influential in the design of literacy programs around the world with parts of the approaches being built into English language courses are offered throughout Australia and the United States as well as in some parts of Europe. It was originally developed in the context of Australian L1 and in connection with the understanding that language is a resource and not just a set of rules (Halliday, 1985).

Domain Oriented Business:

These types of business resources serve to deliver a value proposition to a specific customer segment. For example, an organization that wants to specialize in providing IT services to all pharmaceutical companies in this field will be classified under Business by Scope. These types of business have resources and intelligence that are well developed and serve the target customer segment. They also have a unified set of processes and infrastructure in many cases, such as service centers that cater to specific needs.

As the name suggests, these types of businesses ensure profitability using the developed and implemented infrastructure. For example, the telecom industry makes huge investments in developing a country’s telecom-related infrastructure and then reaps rewards for many years with only small investments in systems to keep them up to date. Wholesalers and retailers are also classified as infrastructure driven companies since they depend on their infrastructure in place to maintain profitability in the long run.

Becoming an expert on the basic and sometimes tedious parts of the job is a simple factor that separates top-performing employees from those who are just average—or worse, those who seem completely disorganized.

The purpose of this article is to outline literacy lesson plans using the framework formulated by Freebody and Luke (1999a) in the Four Sources Model. The reason for my decision to write about the practical application of the Four Sources Model lies in the fact that literacy is an important contemporary topic, particularly in the context of secondary school students. Rush (2004) notes that the research mostly focuses on interfering with reading in the early years of education, while secondary school students are a neglected target group. This paper aims to combat this situation. At the same time, this paper aims to put Freebody and Luke’s four source model into practice, thus creating a necessary precedent in secondary literacy education.

The work consists of three parts. The first part reviews the literature on the four-source model, focusing on the four main roles (such as code breaker, meaning maker, text user, and text parser). In the second part of the paper, the analyzed literacy lesson and educational standards that must be met according to the school curriculum are presented. The third section provides specific lesson plans, giving example activities for each of the four main roles in the Four Resource Model for Freebody and Luke.
